January 6, 1954, marks an important date in the history of the Catholic Church in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. On that day, the Holy See officially announced a decree by which the Apostolic Vicariate of Costermansville changed its name to the Apostolic Vicariate of Bukavu.

The Diocese of Bunia was created on November 10, 1959, whereas it had been the apostolic vicariate since December 16, 1933. This large territory was dismembered to give birth to the diocese of Mahagi in 1962.
