Selon la tradition, Ignace fut disciple des apôtres Pierre et Jean, et aurait connu personnellement plusieurs témoins directs de Jésus-Christ. Né vers 35 dans la province de Syrie et mort à Rome en martyr, probablement en 107 ou 113, Ignace fut le troisième évêque d'Antioche, après saint Pierre et Évode, à qui il succéda vers 68.
