BUTEMBO – After nearly three decades of episcopal leadership marked by security challenges, Bishop Sikuli Paluku Melchisédech of Butembo-Beni has announced his readiness to step down. Faithful to his motto "Fiat Voluntas Tua" (Thy will be done), the prelate, having reached canonical age, now defers to the Holy Father's decision.

A well-deserved rest after a grueling mission

It was during an interview with the diocesan press that the bishop expressed his gratitude to the Lord. After 27 years as bishop, the time has come for reflection and passing the torch. " I now feel ready to relinquish my position as bishop. At my age, I am already exhausted, " he humbly confided, expressing his legitimate need for rest after years of intense work leading this portion of God's people.

Pastor of resilience in the face of war
Consecrated on August 2, 1998, by Cardinal Angelini , Bishop Sikuli is the third bishop of this diocese. His ministry will remain etched in regional history as one of resilience. Indeed, his tenure was almost entirely marked by the horrors of war in eastern DRC.

Yet, despite the terror, he never wavered from his mission of peace. He used this opportunity to send a firm message to the perpetrators of the violence: " To all those who sow terror in our diocese, we affirm that there is a God who acts and who will never abandon us. We yearn for peace, nothing but peace. "

Serenity in waiting
In accordance with canon law, which requires bishops to resign at the age of 75, Bishop Sikuli now awaits the Vatican's appointment of his successor. Until this transition occurs, he continues to fulfill his responsibilities with his characteristic serenity and rigor.

The legacy he leaves behind is that of a pastor who, amidst adversity, was able to maintain the hope of his flock, constantly reminding them that human life remains in the hands of the Supreme Being.
