Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo , Archbishop of Kinshasa, in his capacity as President of SCEAM - Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar - has been in Kigali since Thursday, July 24, for a plenary assembly of the prelates of this structure of the Catholic Church.
Speaking on this occasion, the Congolese prelate expressed his deep concern at the rise in violence, massive population displacement and the persistence of armed conflicts on the African continent.
To this end, the Cardinal deplored the fact that Africa remains marked by repeated coups d'état, internal tensions and prolonged crises before specifying: "If we look at its global reality, Africa is today crossed by conflicts and tensions; it is still the only continent where we speak of repeated coups d'état."
Cardinal Ambongo particularly emphasized the worrying situation in the Great Lakes region, referring to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, which he described as "extraordinary and serious," but also to the ongoing difficulties in Uganda, Burundi, and especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where violence continues to plague the east of the country.
His call comes at a time when armed violence, political crises, and humanitarian disasters continue to fuel concerns across the African continent. As President of SECAM, Fridolin Ambongo calls for a collective awakening, both among political actors and the international community.
