He is known for his profound spirituality, his commitment to the poor, and his lasting influence on Christian morality. Born on September 27, 1696, died on August 1, 1787, beatified on September 6, 1816, canonized on May 26, 1839, and declared a Doctor of the Church on March 23, 1871.
